DR. EDWARD RUGGLES (American, 19th Century) PAIR OF MINIATURE PAINTINGS. Oil on paper mounted on light board. 1) Titled “Maine Coast” shows small steamboat under gray and white rain clouds with crashing waves on rocky shore. Appears to be unsigned but titled on reverse. 2) A mill next to dam with figure in background. This piece is lightly signed bottom right, which is hard to distinguish. It is titled on the back “Old Mill …”. Housed in identical antique gilt gesso decorated frames. REFERENCE: A letter dated 1956 from the Frick Art Reference Library indicates history of artist. Also a letter from the Museum of the City of New York dated 1957. SIZE: 3-1/2” x 5”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-26778 (2,500-3,500)
