THOMAS H. WILLIS (American, 1850-1925) BATTLE ON THE HIGH SEAS. Interesting silk fabric and oil on canvas depiction of a WWI era sea battle. A submarine has surfaced and is firing its deck gun against a British ship. An American ship is pursuing, firing its own deck gun at the submarine. There are ten blue uniform sailors on the four-stack ship flying American flag. The single-stack British vessel has many men on deck filling one life boat and having two others in the water. A white capped green sea under gray and white cloud sky with glimpse of blue. Signed bottom right with artist monogram “T W”. Housed in a fine modern gilt frame with glass front. SIZE: Overall: 16″ x 28-3/4″. Sight: 13-3/4″ x 26-3/4″. CONDITION: Some losses to silk rigging, fabric has curled at bow of British boat. 8-76267 (650-850)
