NANTUCKET LIGHT SHIP BASKET BY R.J. LEICHTER. Circa 1973. Sometimes referred to as “The Weekender”, this large oval special order Nantucket basket designed and made by R. J. Leichter for Marion Stevens See whose name is etched on a bone placard underneath lid. On the top of the lid, mounted on an oval rosewood plaque, is a carved bone representation of Martha’s Vineyard. The lid joined to the conforming purse with bone latch and hinges. The bentwood swing handle also attached to the basket with bone fittings. Beneath the object is the brand of R.J. Leichter incorporating an image of a Nantucket light ship. The maker’s name is also engraved on the edge of the Martha’s Vineyard carving. SIZE: 13″ h including handle, 8″ h of basket, 13-3/4″ l overall x 9″ w overall. CONDITION: Very good overall. Small break to weaving on rim of lid. 9-20557 (1,000-1,500)
