Additional Information: We have been told by collectors that this is likely a mold for creating papier mache figures. Similar molds of different subjects were used in the Philippines. We also believe the mold is later than 18th Century.

LARGE AND RARE FOLK ART “MAN IN THE MOON” CARVING. 18th Century. France. This deeply carved figure in three sections of a crescent moon, the center of which is a high-relief carving of a smiling face. Each section carved from the solid in oak or beech with nicely weathered surfaces. The smiling face with pronounced cheeks and eyebrows centering a pointed Aquiline nose. A truly spectacular example that would be a focal point in any folk art collection. SIZE: 41″ overall h, 34″ approx. overall d. x 14-1/2 x. PROVENANCE: Purportedly acquired from the lobby of an old hotel in Monte Carlo, France from where it was subsequently purchased and then acquired by the present owner. The last re-assembly of the three sections was done with a heavy brown glue visible in the seams, otherwise surface has weathered with a very good patina as noted with some restoration to tip of lower part of crescent. 9-26289 (5,000-7,000)
