FINE SAMURAI SWORD, ITO-MAKI-NO TACHI MOUNT WITH LACQUER SHEATH. 2nd half 19th Century. This is a cord-wrapped slung sword (Ito-maki-no tachi). The tachi is a sword with a blade length normally longer than 60 centimeters, carried with the cutting edge down. The scabbard of this example is decorated in lacquer of the type known as nashiji, which has a mottled bronze hued lacquer finish. It is decorated with arabesque scrolling bronze mounts. The suspension cords are joined to cast bronze mounts which appear to be gold filled. The burnished blade with wavy polish line. The handle wrap woven with cast bronze leafy garland palm ornaments on either side of the handle. The cast bronze tsuba unblemished. The scabbard tip and buttcap also original. SIZE: Overall 36-1/2″ l. 28″ blade l. CONDITION: This fine example appears to be in very good, untouched condition. 9-21695 (1,200-1,800)
