TWO FOLK ART CARVED WOOD MACKEREL PLOWS. 1) 8″ l carved in the form of a fish with inlaid double compass design, the tail having a slate cutter. 2) 7-3/4″ l carved in the form of a woman’s leg with a high top boot having detailed button holes & heel, missing it’s slate cutter. Carved with initials “E.T.” with vine. Probably of Maine origin. These mackerel plows were used by fisherman to score the spring mackerel to open the fish flesh so it would look more plump and fat. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Avis Howell, Belfast, Maine. CONDITION: Generally very good, show use. 9-25152 (600-900)
