CHINA TRADE PAINT DECORATED CAMPHOR SEAMAN’S CHEST. First quarter 19th century. The rectangular box with hinged lid and brass carrying handles covered in hide, painted in brick red with scrolling floral vinery borders in mustard, cream and mocha, bordered with rows of brass tacks, the edges with brass strapping. For a similar example see The Decorative Art of The China Trade by Carl L. Crossman, page 245, colorplate 94. SIZE: 12″ h x 29-1/2″ l x 15″ d. CONDITION: All original with minor losses to brass studs and some separation to brass strapping. Lockplate and ring handle original. Some losses to paint decoration on bottom edge and at hinge line. 9-97897 (800-1,200)
