CARVED TOBACCONIST FIGURE ON STAND. Circa 1970. Signed by the maker, Peter Wing. A folksy polychrome painted depiction of a Native American chief in feathered headdress, tunic and moccasins with eagle decorations. On the left arm of the figure is a painted advertisement which reads “HIGHEST GRADE / SMOKING / TOBACCO”. Figure appears to hold a single cigar in his left hand. The figure’s right arm is carved as if holding an instrument now absent. A later hatchet now accompanies the figure. The original square stand is retained with the figure on the front of which is painted “IMPORTED CIGARS”. SIZE: 50″ h of figure, 72″ h overall. PROVENANCE: Barbara J. Thornsjo Estate, Albion, Maine CONDITION: Vertical shrinkage cracks throughout front of figure. Small losses to fringe of tunic. Original painted surfaces in need of cleaning and polishing. Otherwise very good. Square base structurally intact, but with extensive and major damage due to claw marks from cats. 9-20802 (400-600)
