5 CENT BALLY RELIANCE DICE MACHINE. From the turn of the 20th century, gambling machines always enticed the prospective player through means of gimmicks, visual attraction, or some other method in order to get their hard earned money. The Bally Reliance machine was an ingenious coin-operated gambling device created in the 1930s that simulated the game of craps. In a visually attractive and brightly colored cabinet, it appealed by nature to all prospective players, especially those who favored the game of craps. This particular model was activated by a nickel and upon depositing the coin and depressing the handle, a set of dice appeared in the first window. If a 7 or 11 appeared, you were an instant winner! If a 2 or 12 appeared, you were an instant loser. All other combinations became your “point” number to make. So if you had an 8 in the first window, you pressed the handle until an 8 came up and you won, or you “crapped out” by throwing a 7. A very complex mechanism with Bakelite drums that were prone to deterioration over time, and a multitude of springs that if they became weak or worn out, would affect the playability of the machine. This particular example has been fully restored externally to its original appeal, and the mechanism has been gone over and lubricated, and is in functional working condition. One more feature is the “Gold Award” coin that would be awarded if you threw four 7’s or 11’s in succession in the left box. SIZE: 16″ w x 12″ d x 17″ h. CONDITION: Very fine plus restored condition. 1-10988 (12,000-15,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2011 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
