SIGNED A. WATEAU (French) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN. Oil on canvas mounted to panel shows a half portrait of a young gentleman with long brown hair, blue coat and white cravat. He holds a reddish material at waist. A landscape background. Signed at center right “A Wateau 1714″. NOTE: The oval canvas has been mounted on a rectangular board which has been painted in the corners to fill the panel. This was done at a later time, possibly in the 18th or 19th Century. The panel has been split and reinforced with butterfly wedges and a small board completes the right side. Housed in an impressive 19th Century gilt gesso decorated frame with oval window. SIZE: 34″ x 26-1/2”. CONDITION: Large losses to corners outside of oval hidden below frame, area of cracking and some loss below his right shoulder. Some lifting of canvas on the right side with some inpainting and restoration. Fair. 9-97888 (1,000-2,000)
