UNIQUE SS COPTIC CARPENTER’S HARD WOOD SEA CHEST. Last quarter 19th century. Rectangular dovetailed sea chest with hinged lid, the interior fully fitted with till and mountings for tools. Most notable is the presence of a fine oil painting portrait of the steamship COPTIC; a four-masted ship built in England and registered to the White Star Line. Built in 1881 she was used primarily in the Pacific in the occidental and Oriental services transporting passengers and freight. Painting is unsigned. Purportedly the chest was property of one of the steamship’s carpenters. SIZE: Lid: 17-1/2″ x 42″. Chest: 18-1/2″ h x 42″ l x 17-3/4″ d. CONDITION: Chest in “as found” condition. Painting on lid interior in overall good condition and we believe to be fully restorable. 9-25400 (2,000-3,000)
