STATE OF MAINE PINE AND BIRCH STEPBACK BOOKCASE. Mid 19th century. This nice example, in two parts, retains the original stencil of “J.P. CAFFREY & Co. / Cabinet Makers / Waterville Me”, active during the 1840s and 50s. The upper section with straight molded corners projecting above a pair of 10 panel glass doors opening to an interior of 5 fixed shelves above 4 aligned short drawers stepped back and fitted to the lower case of two banks of three short drawers centering a pair of cupboard doors opening to a partitioned space of 4 small fixed shelves (2 absent). The whole raised on turnip feet. SIZE: 89″ h x 61″ w overall x 19″ d. CONDITION: Cabinet retains original cleaned surfaces with medium brown color. Glass panes intact, the bookcase interior with original red wash. Very good overall. 9-98365 (800-1,200)
