FINELY EXECUTED WORKING BUILDER’S MODEL OF A TWIN-CYLINDER HORIZONTAL REVERSING STEAM ENGINE. This fine and highly detailed engine was probably built as a salesman’s sample or factory display model by “Northland” Co. In the center of the display base is an embossed pennant with the name “Northland” in the center, Heavy duty aluminum” above, and “Made in U.S.A.” below. However except for the stamped aluminum base, all parts appear to be of steel and brass. This intricately detailed engine appears to be complete with all parts functioning smoothly by turning the flywheel. This engine is a unique design with the twin side-by-side horizontal cylinders of approx. 1-3/4” bore x 1-1/2” stroke. The opposing connecting rods run back approx. 4” and connect to a transverse horizontal crankshaft which has the 6” dia. spoked flywheel attached at one eng. The center of the flywheel has a raised circular flat rim which hold a flat, spring-configured drive belt, which in-turn drives a secondary crankshaft mounted to the connecting rod housings. This cross shaft has a flat-belt drive which is connected to the governor assembly. The side-mounted valve chests are connected by an intricate linkage system, on both sides, to the crankshaft. The detailed governor assembly, housings, and valves are brass. Center augned hand-operated reversing lever with spring-operated recessed stops. The base, cylinder and connecting rod housings, and crankshaft support, painted machine-gree. The reversing assembly, linkages and flywheel painted machine-red. SIZE: Base is 17” l x 10-1/4” w. Height to top of flywheel 6-1/2”. Height to top of governor 10-3/8″. Width of model 10-3/4″. CONDITION: Consignor had this model stored for many years and it is in original, untouched, uncleaned condition with a light oil and dust coating. Various spots of flaking paint on the base. This is a museum quality model if cleaned, polished and repainted. 1-10549 (1,500-2,500)
