UNUSUAL SHERATON BIRCH AND FIGURED MAPLE CHEST OF DRAWERS WITH CUPBOARD TOP. Second quarter 19th century, probably Maine. This example in three parts. The upper case with a pair of cupboard doors opening to an interior fitted with four drawers beneath a molded cornice. The frieze and door panels of figured maple; stepped back and fitted to a deck with two aligned drawers, the drawer fronts of figural maple panels, stepped back on a rectangular chest of drawers, the case fitted with four drawers, the uppermost projecting above the three. The drawer fronts all of figured maple with crossbanded dividers and flanked by turned columnar pilasters continuing to ring-turned urn-form legs on pointed feet. The convex apron veneered in figured mahogany. SIZE: 67″ h x 41″ w x 20″ d. CONDITION: Piece retains original surfaces, somewhat dry in appearance with old incidental repairs to veneers. The cupboard door panels with old horizontal shrinkage cracks. Small losses to veneers throughout. Structurally good. In need of cosmetic restoration. 9-98381 (1,000-1,500)
