RARE AND FINE RED FIGURE PELIKE. 300-400 BC, Greece or Southern Italy. Of typical form with wide molded mouth; handles extending from beneath the lip to the shoulder of the swelled body continuing to the circular ribbed foot. Decorated on one side with a Classical robed maiden in motion, a wreath in her right hand. Opposing side depicting a seated nude male winged figure with round “shield?” with serpent raised in right hand. Each bordered with foliate decorations above a scrolling border. SIZE: 9-1/2″ h. PROVENANCE: Discovered off the port of San Georgio, Southern Italy and given to the consignor as a wedding gift by a town official in 1960.
