KARL PIERRE DAUBIGNY (French, 1846-1886) LANDSCAPE WITH HOUSE. Oil on wood panel shows a house nestled amongst trees under white cloud and blue sky. Housed in a fancy period gesso decorated frame with brass artist tag. Painting is quite dirty and we do not see a signature. There is a letter on the back written to the consignor’s distant family member, dated “1931”. This is on “J. F. Millet” letterhead. Titled letterhead states: “Atelier de J. F. Millet, Barbizon, Foret de Fontainebleau”. The letter in pen script in French as follows: “Recu je monseau le Reverend Ashley A. Smith. D. D. la ? je Treize cents francs (1300) pour un tableau je Karl Daubigny-paysage Barbizon le 1 aout 1931” and signed “P. Dankin” with a signature. Also a French stamp which is signed and dated. Back of the panel has an old label with artist name and possibly a title. PROVENANCE: From a fine Bangor, Maine Estate. SIZE: 5-1/4” x 12-1/2”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-72725 (2,000-4,000)
