H. L. SWAN (American, 19th Century) RIVER VIEW OF AUGUSTA, MAINE. Oil on canvas topographical view of a river leading to long covered bridge with riverboat beside. The left side having railroad tracks below a steep hillside with houses and churches. The railroad tracks leading to a series of connected brick buildings; one flying an American flag. Low hills beyond and a small group of houses on far shore. Signed lower right “H. L. Swan 1878″. Housed in a modern red painted wood frame with gilt liner. Central Maine paintings depicting towns are very rare and this is a particularly interesting example. We were unable to find any listing for the artist but there was a silversmith as well as a clockmaker in this Swan family of Augusta, Maine. SIZE: 16″ x 22”. CONDITION: Craquelure, some minor chipping to bottom. Otherwise very good. 9-98370 (1,000-1,500)
