THEODORE ROUSSEAU (French, 1812-1867) EVENING LANDSCAPE. Oil on thin mahogany panel scene shows water with hills beyond, trees and rocks under a sunset landscape. Signed bottom right “Th. R”. Housed in a fine 19th Century deep gilt gesso decorated frame. Back of the panel has a label with stamp, also another black stamp which is illegible. This corresponds to a stamp on the frame which is round and “Celni Grad Praha”. A letter is affixed to the back from the “Kleinova Gallerie of Praha, Grand Hotel Sroubek” dated July 22, 1931. The hand written letter as follows: “I, Oscar Klein, proprietor of Kleinova Gallerie Praha, Grand Hotel Sroubek-do hereby guarantee that the oil-painting, sold by him this day-is a genuine canvass oil-painting by Theodore Rousseau at the price of $75…Signed in the presence of witnesses”. With witness signature the Klein’s signature. Also what appears to be a 20 Kolek stamp dated “1919”. PROVENANCE: From a fine Bangor, Maine Estate. SIZE: 4-1/2” x 14”.
