UNIQUE PAIR OF SHEET STEEL CROWNED LION WEATHERVANES. Last quarter 19th century. Each in the form of a rearing crowned lion with double tail, holding orb, elements to be found in various heraldic emblems and coats-of-arms. Fashioned from two steel sheets riveted together, giving 3-dimensional effect to body of lion and to orb. Mounted and swiveling on steel post with attached directionals, arrow, and copper ball, terminating in X-form scrolled wrought iron base. SIZE: Each vane 28-1/2″ h. x 24″ w. and 65″ h. overall. PROVENANCE: Consignor states that this fine pair of weathervanes was removed from the New Hope School building in Sarasota, Florida. CONDITION: One lion in very good condition, structurally intact. Second lion with old restoration at juncture of orb and body, one rear leg slightly bent at ankle, some structural deterioration due to rusting at front rear paw. Each base with normal and expected weathering and minor rusting. One ball with bullet hole at mid-molding. 9-99631 (6,000-8,000)
