O-CHI-YAI (Japanese, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAMSHIP “COSTA RICA”. Detailed gouache portrait of the black hulled center wheeled steamer sailing left to right with other sails off bow and stern. Bottom left artist signed “O-Chi-Yai Nagasaki”. Titled bottom center “Costa Rica” and bottom right “Drawer”. Outside the center wheel housing is written “P.M.S.S. Co.”. The ship is seen flying an American flag off stern, the decks having 30 figures, the sea in a light to dark blue. Housed in a white painted carved wood frame decorated with shell motifs with matte which could be its original frame. The 1783 ton Costa Rica was built in 1891 in Chester, PA and was part of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. In 1917 it was sold to L.A. Pederson, NY; in 1923 sold to Northern Fisheries, San Francisco; and was scrapped in 1935. SIZE: Sight: 17-1/4″ x 26-3/4″. CONDITION: Not examined out of frame. No rips or tears evident. All over foxing spots, strong colors and some light water marks and scratches. 9-96300 (3,000-5,000)
