UNSIGNED (European)OLD MASTER TRYPTIC. Large oil on gessoed wood panel tryptic has its original gilt decorated with gilt writing frame. Written on the frame is the following Latin phrase “ANGE LVS DOMINIA PPARVIT IOSEPH DICENS SVRGE ACCIPE PVERVMEP MATRE MEIVS ETFVGEINE GIPTVNFT ESTOIBIVS OEDVM DICAMTIBI MATHEI SEGVN DO CAPITVLO”. Central two-board panel depicts what appears to be Mary and Joseph, three children and three other figures bringing baskets of fruit. The left panel showing two figures with sunburst atop with dove. Right panel with baby being offered to a king with others beside. Panels are attached with cotter pin hinges. The piece appears very early, possibly prior to 1700 but we can not determine the age. SIZE: Central panel is 34-1/2″ x 31″. Side panels are 34-1/2″ x 15-1/2″. CONDITION: There is paint losses, uneven varnish layer. In need of restoration. Undoubtedly there is some restoration which is hidden by a masking varnish. 9-91024 (1,000-2,000)
