LARGE AND IMPORTANT AMERICAN EAGLE TRADE SIGN. Third quarter 19th century, Northeastern Massachusetts. This large sign retaining its original painted surfaces depicting a folksy interpretation of a displayed eagle perching on the shield of the United States from which emanates an array of flags, standards, spears, pikes, and halberds beneath which is the name W. SHEPHERD in mustard paint. The sign is framed within an outer surround of serpentine edges and decorated with scrolling leaf work, each centered within an orange cartouche. The sign retains two original wrought-iron hanging brackets. The reverse, considerably more faded, retains the remnants of what may have been a star filled banner above the eagle. It also has an old shipping label nailed to the surface which reads in script: “R.N. Rice/Concord/Mass./From Boston over/the Middlesex Central R.R.” SIZE: Overall h. 57″ x w 59-3/4″. Sign measures 49″ x 59″. CONDITION: Structurally sound both sides with faded and warn painted surfaces, one side more so than the other with weathering and shrinkage cracks throughout.
