HOYT’S ANIMATED BLACK AMERICANA SHADOWBOX PICTURE. Of English manufacture during the early 20th century, this is a most deceptive picture when hanging on one’s wall. Slowly the facial expression changes from being simple and humble to a grinning gentleman showing huge lips and an abundance of teeth. To the unsuspecting, they step back and gasp as the series of cams and the clockwork mechanism changes the facial expression radically. Encased behind glass, these pictures usually hung in pubs, saloons, gambling parlors, etc. This particular example has a paper label on the rear with directions for use. SIZE: 21″ w x 26″ h x 4″ d. CONDITION: The paper background with an illustration of the gentleman’s shirt is in fair condition with heavy water stains, a tear and some paper loss at the upper corners; paper is rippled in a few spots. The frame is loose from the box and needs reattachment. Includes key. 1-9854 (1,500-2,000)
