RARE SHEET IRON FOUR OWL WEATHERVANE. Second half 19th century, American. Modeled with four owls perched side by side on a cast iron rod, each with pierced eyes, “looking” in various directions. With remnants of old painted surfaces. This is purportedly the back section of a larger weathervane of owls. Originally the complete vane had seven owls, with three being on the front section. Consignor of this weathervane is acquainted with the owner of the other section, thereby supporting the description of the whole. Offered without stand. Note: a 6-owl copper example sold at the Robert Glass auction of April 12, 2001 for the sum of $25,000. That example was 7′ in length, the owls ranging in size from 6″ to 17″. SIZE: Owls range from 12″ to 21″ h. Overall: 40″ l. CONDITION: Surfaces with overall rust and with some losses to ear tips and to tips of tail feathers. Cast iron rod misshapen and the original supports have been cut. One ear on largest owl probably a later replacement. Otherwise good. 9-26282 (3,000-4,000)
