PAINTED WOOD TRADE SIGN. Late 19th century, New York. The kidney shaped sign reading “N.A. CALKINS/PENSION,/BOUNTY/&/GENERAL/CLAIM-agent.” The sign in white, blue and red on a black ground with scrolling foliate accents. Note: N.A. Calkins (June 20, 1845-July 27, 1927) fought in the Civil War, was an attorney in Coxsackie, NY. SIZE: 20-1/2″ h x 13-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: Birge Calhoun, Chatham, NY, a contractor that found the sign in a building staircase that was closed up in 1902 (according to the historical record) on Main Street in Chatham, New York, when he was remodeling the building. Peter Dworkin, Copake, NY acquired the sign from B. Calhoun. Private Collection, New York City, acquired the sign from P. Dworkin in July 2002. This lot additionally accompanied by a three page letter from Raymond Beecher, Vedder Research Librarian and Greene County Historian for Greene County, New York dated 9/26/02 relating additional background information regarding Newton A. Calkins. Additionally two pages of copies of court records from Greene County transcribed from Beers, History of Greene County, pages 35, 36 listing N.A. Calkins as a practicing attorney in the year 1860. Also, a four page document taken from J.B. Beers’ History of Greene County, 1884 titled “Fraternities and Societies” in which N.A. Calkins is mentioned as an officer of the Knights of Pythias, Eureka Lodge, No. 131 in the year 1883. CONDITION: With small losses to background paint. Lettering and decorations primarily intact.
