UNSIGNED (American, 3rd Quarter 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP JOSEPH CLARK. Impressive large watercolor depicting the three masted brig Joseph Clark under full sail, approaching a headland, with 5 additional ships of varying types and size in the background. Several seamen visible throughout the ship. Five signal flags above an American flag flying from the mizzen mast. Done in colors of blues and greens, the ship’s hull in dark gray. Housed in a molded gilt wood frame. The Joseph Clark was built in Waldoboro, Maine, a brig of 1308 tons and launched in 1856. During the period of 1874-1876 Captain Charles Cooper Park of Searsport, Maine was Master of the Ship. Accompanying the watercolor is a collection of 9 handwritten journals belonging Charles Cooper Park relating to several voyages on various ships. SIZE: 30″ x 45″. PROVENANCE: By descent through the Park family to the current owner. Charles Park was one of three brothers, all of whom were sea captains and still active in 1882. Coincidentally in 1882 the Joseph Clark, then captained by C.L. Whitney, was wrecked by a hurricane in the mid-Atlantic. CONDITION: Watercolor in very fine original condition with some yellowing through age. Journals and account books legible, accompanied by several loose sheets, all well worn from use. 9-98414 (5,000-7,000)
