IMPORTANT PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN OVAL BRIDE’S BOX, BASKET & TRINKET BOX. Late 18th century, Shenandoah Valley. The three beautifully painted and decorated items of German folk art, originating within the same family. The largest box of bent pine joined by woven caning, the lid painted with the figures of a bride and groom in formal attire, flanked by plumes and within a scrolling floral border; the sides of the bride’s box painted with garlands of tulips and berries. The small trinket box accompanying this lot is paint-decorated by a polychrome floral arrangement in a classical basket on a cream ground. The square wooden basket with bentwood handle and canted sides, overall polychrome-floral-decorated on a black ground, the basket interior originally painted in cream or ivory, the center floral decorated. Flat basket rims painted with German sayings. SIZE: Bride’s box: 6-1/2” h. x 17-1/2” l. x 10-3/4” w. Trinket box: 2” h. x 5-1/4” l. x 3-3/4” w. Basket: 5-1/2” h. x 6-7/8” sq. PROVENANCE: Acquired by the current owner from the original owners by descent within the Shenandoah Valley. CONDITION: Large bride’s box and smaller trinket box both retain original painted surfaces and are in untouched condition. Small loss to lid of large box, proper left side. Trinket box with some paint losses in area of basket and on sides of box. Basket with some replacements to top of handle, small damage to outside of basket rim, small losses to feet; painted surfaces of basket mostly old and original, with exception of handle. 9-99613 (4,500-5,500)
