HISTORIC PAINTED LIFT TOP CAMPAIGN DESK OF CAPTAIN A.B. MATHEWS, CO. H, 2ND MAINE CAVALRY. The dovetailed box having a breadboard end lid with butt hinges and lockplate. The interior fitted with sectioned compartments. A wonderful robin egg blue paint. The lid having in black “Capt. A.B. Mathews Comp. H. 2cd Maine Cavalry”. The 2nd Maine Cavalry was organized at Augusta, Maine from November 30th, 1863 to January 2nd, 1864. Went to New Orleans, LA. On the 9th of August the Regt. embarked at New Orleans for Pensacola, FL where they took part in a number of raids and then in Sept. went to Marinna and then on to Pollard, AL in December. In Feb. of 1865 under Lt. Col. Andrew Spurling (Medal of Honor Recipient) attacked the enemy in considerable force at Milton, FL and routed them. Then joining in March under Gen. Steele’s command and were involved in the capture of Mobile. The regiment returned to Augusta, Maine where they were discharged December 21st, 1865. SIZE: 12″ h x 21-1/4″ w x 15″ d. PROVENANCE: Collection of Avis Howell, Belfast, Maine. CONDITION: Stains and ink spatter, majority of paint intact, shows use, generally good. 9-25149 (600-900)
