RARE PATRIOTIC BANDANNA CENTENNIAL AMERICAN QUILT. Circa 1876. This two-sided example with 39-star flags, George Washington panel, a panel of the Memorial Hall Art Gallery, etc. Quilted overall with fabric prepared for the U.S. Centennial of 1876 and bordered with 39-star American flags. NOTE: An official flag with 39 stars was never used. Flag manufacturers believed that the two Dakotas would be admitted as one state and so manufactured this flag, some of which still exist. The next official flag incorporated 43 stars. This flag became official in 1890 with the admission of North & South Dakota. Alternating with the displayed eagle panels and those of the great shield is a central panel printed with the text of the Declaration of Independence bordered by the state shields of the original 13. The lower right panel depicting “MEMORIAL HALL ART GALLERY/ 1776. CENTENNIAL. 1876.” beneath the great shield of the United States. all within a star border. The upper right panel is an oval portrait of George Washington standing by his horse, document in hand within an oval cartouche the word “WASHINGTON” above the Liberty Bell. The panel on the upper left depicting the United States flag flanked by a border of other world countries. Beneath the heading “INTERNATIONAL PATENTED DECEMBER 28 1875″. The lower left with an identical panel. The reverse quilted with a series of diagonal calico panels of centennial themes within a lattice work of 13-star American flags. SIZE: 78″ x 80”. PROVENANCE: Purchased by the current owner in Bel Air, Maryland 1949. CONDITION: The primary side with some fading and minimal and minor spot staining. The quilt edges retain integrity. The reverse with a circular 2″ brown stain near bottom panels and a corresponding lighter stain 6″ to the right facing. Overall this fine and rare example presents well and is in very good structural condition with strong colors. 9-20540 (2,000-4,000)
