OUTSTANDING & RARE COLLECTION OF CIVIL WAR LETTERS INCLUDING THE 20TH MAINE. This family collection encompasses letters from two brothers, Addison and Harlan Bailey, who left the family farm in Woolwich, Maine during the fall of 1862 to serve in the Civil War. According to the death certificate, Addison died of typhoid fever in a Baton Rouge military hospital on March 26, 1863. According to Harlan’s death certificate, signed by Company Commander Thomas Chamberlain, he was killed instantly by a minie ball to the head, while charging the enemy works at the ‘Battle of the Wilderness’ in Virginia, on May 5, 1864. The two boys were younger brothers of Maria Bailey Wright who lived in neighboring Wiscasset, Maine. During the war, the boys wrote many letters to Maria who ultimately tucked them away in a small stationary box. They were later found, cataloged and kept by our consignor. The letters are contained in a notebook with protective sheets and a transcription of each letter precedes it. The family has provided a wealth of information regarding the two boys with pictures of the home where the letters were found and history of the family. The important letters of Harlan Bailey are the 31 letters to Maria Wright from 20th Maine locations dated August 19, 1862 to April 22, 1864, with 17 envelopes. Locations include: Portland, Me., Sharpsburg, MD; Baltimore, MD; Patterson Park Hospital; camp near Falmouth, VA; camp near Elesford, VA; camp near Antietam; camp near Warrington, VA; camp near Beverlies Ford, VA; Culpeper; Fairfax, VA; Auburn, VA; camp at Rappahhannoc Sta.. The important letters of Addison include 13 letters to Maria Wright from the 21st Maine locations Sept. 19, 1862 – March 1, 1863 with three envelopes. Locations include: Augusta, ME; New York, NY; Camp Maine, East NY; Camp Maine; Baton Rouge; Camp Banks. Also included are two other family letters, one from Maria Wright to Addison Bailey, March 8, 1863 which was returned. Also a JM Bailey letter to Sullivan Wright, April 11, 1863. Also included is a hand written song for the 21st Regt. and a hand written poem for the 21st Maine Co. “Homeward Bound”. In total there are 48 letters, 24 envelopes and two hand written items. Included in this family lot of items is a 18″ x 15″ framed memorial hair wreath which is accompanied by a list of hair donors including Harlan and Addison; A tinted tintype of Harlan Bailey in Civil War uniform; An ambrotype of what possibly could be Maria Wright; a daguerreotype of Addison & Harlan Bailey taken in 1847 as children in Woolwich, Maine; and a tintype of Addison Bailey in Civil War uniform. Also included is an ambrotype of a man titled “Charles Hand 1858 Handsboro, Mississippi”. CONDITION: Letters are clear and very good. 9-20991 (3,000-5,000)
