IMPORTANT AMERICAN HOOKED RUG. Circa 1887, probably Pennsylvania. The central section woven with polychrome striations creating a marbleized effect, the edges a series of scallops within a row of circular flowerheads set in a marbleized border in earthy tones of green and brown. Within a side section is woven the date “1887”. Each corner with a large stylized tulip. The contemporary or Orientalist nature of the swirling central design not unlike that of the “Coffee and Cream” rug exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1937, designed by Mrs. Lillian Mills Mosseller of New York, see page 213 Rare Hooked Rugs by William Winthrop Kent. SIZE: 8′ 8″ x 8′ 7″. CONDITION: Very good overall with an exceptional palette. With a canvas backing and professional repairs throughout. 9-98134 (7,500-12,500)
