NEW AND EXACT MAP OF THE DOMINIONS OF THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN ON YE CONTINENT OF NORTH AMERICA BY HERMAN MOLL 1715. This outstanding map with vivid hand-coloring is the first large-scale map to show English developments in North American and the first to show the American postal routes. The map was done during the dispute between France and Great Britain over boundaries and this was the first showing of their positions following the treaty of Utrecht in 1713. This map is referred to as the “Beaver Map” and gets its name from the wonderful 9″ x 9″ depiction of beavers working building a dam next to Niagara Falls. At the time beaver pelts were a significant part of the American fur trade. The map also incorporates four inset maps at the base as well as a colorful cartouche inscription to “Walter Dowglass”. The map has been affixed to a backing board and housed in a modern frame. A wonderful, rare opportunity at a very desirable map in wonderful condition. SIZE: 41″ x 24-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From a private Maine home. CONDITION: Very good. Some minor edge splits. 9-26621 (17,500-22,500)
