FRAMED STEPHEN DECATUR LETTER. The gilt wood framed presentation including a colored engraving of Stephen Decatur in a battle in the Barbary Wars. Below which is a one-page letter headed “Brooklyn Sept. 27th, 1822”. It is signed “God Bless You” “Decatur” and sent to Capt. G.W. (George Washington) Rodgers, US Navy. The letter as follows: “Dear Rodgers, I have just a few moments to offer and them I will give to you. do not come home for some days. I would not caution you against it, was it not that there is a case of yellow fever next door to your house. (a black man from N.Y.) I see by the papers that the next examination of midshipmen will be held in this city on the 1st of Oct. and will be conducted by Captains Porter, Evans & McDonoughy. What time will Com’d. Rodgers return. and will he stop at the yard? Give me this information. I am afraid that I shall be compelled to publish my paper, I intend sending them a copy of my charges against Capt. Evans. Passed my best respects to Mrs. R, Mrs. P. not forgetting Mr. and Mrs. P. Your friend in haste, God Bless You, Decatur”. NOTE: An interesting reference by Decatur to a “black” man at a time when this was not the usual term for an African America. The back having a certificate of authenticity from Charles Hamilton Autographs affixed with a wax seal. SIZE: Letter: 9-1/2″ x 7-1/2″. Total: 25-1/2″ x 14-1/2″.
