RARE CARVED FOLK ART FIGURE OF BLIND JUSTICE. Third quarter 19th century. This historical figure purportedly was once mounted at a New Hampshire courthouse. The full bodied carved figure rendered with long flowing black hair wearing a blindfold, a brass set of balance scales held in her upraised left hand. The right hand is gripping the hilt of a sword, the blade now absent. She is clothed in flowing full length robes standing barefooted on a carved plinth. SIZE: 41-1/2″ h. CONDITION: The figure with expected and normal shrinkage cracks. The right forearm hand has been reattached. As previously stated, the sword blade is absent. The scale pans with damages and old repairs. The painted surfaces with normal and expected losses having very nice color and patina. The plinth, in green paint, has the most extensive paint loss. There are paint chips to left cheek, brow, and within hair. 9-97821 (40,000-60,000)
