CAPTAIN A. M. HARRISON AESTHETIC WALNUT DESK. Circa 1874, Massachusetts. This fine diminutive example designed with a raised cabinet fitted with central sliding door mounted with an enamel tile decorated with a Classical mask within a drapery swag within raised carved panels. The door flanked by tambour panels when closed. The interior fitted with an arrangement of cubby holes and drawers. The top with hinged baise writing surface opening to a shallow well. To the right of the well is a panel with a shallow round depression. Upon inserting a hollow key and turning, a hidden locking mechanism releases the bank of drawers and door below. The compartments within the door will then slide out giving access to another small space of concealment. All above a single bank of short drawers over a panel door, each inset with tiles of polychrome enamel decorations. The interior side of the bank fitted with conforming tiled panel forward of a vertical tambour slide opening to shelves. The opposing side supported by a pair of swelled acanthus carved legs. The rear of the desk finished with inset panels, each mounted with a central floral decorated enamel tile. Affixed to the center of the frieze is a bronze plaque with the inscription “This secretary was made for Capt. A.M. Harrison, U.S. Coast Survey by Jnd. B. Wilson Jr. Plymouth, Mass December, 1874.” SIZE: Overall: 37-1/2″ h. Writing surface: 27-1/2″ h x 36-1/2″ w x 25-1/4″ d. CONDITION: Very fine original condition. 9-25854 (3,000-5,000)
