OUTSTANDING & RARE SHIP’S WHALING LOG OF THE SHIP “COLUMBUS”, 1821-3. The book of double sided pages having a front & back section which is printed (25 in front, 17 in back) and the center section in manuscript form. The front section including a title page “The Seaman’s Journal. Being an easy and correct method of keeping the daily reckoning of a ship, during the course of her voyage”. “Boston: Printed for and sold by West & Richardson, No. 75, Cornhill. E.G. House, Printer, No. 5, Court-Street”. The back section having a back page advertisement for West & Richardson including a long list of printed material. All the printed pages with the exception of four are filled in. The center hand written sections are from November 4th, 1821 and titled “Remarks on board the ship Columbus”. There is an average of about five entries per page and the written ends April 9th, 1823 with a title “Remarks off Cape Horn, 1823”. The handwriting is very clear and most entries involve weather conditions, activities, location & traveling time. Some family notes are included which indicate that the Captain, who is an ancestor of the consignor, was Bartlett Mayhew and probably the boat was out of New Bedford, MA. There are 43 double sided manuscript pages. On the second page is a tally of whales killed & saved by the Columbus’s three boats, “30, 28, 30”. Headings include locations of Coast of California, Chile, Cape Horn, Coast of Mexico, Port of St. Joseph’s, Mariases Islands, Coast of Japan, and more. Five other documents are there which includes some later documents, one titled “Number of fowl killed”, a list of whales killed, and a five-page poem. The cover titled “Bartlett Columbus”. SIZE: 13″ x 8-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Descended through the family of the Captain. CONDITION: Very good. 9-20674 (4,000-6,000)
