RARE & IMPORTANT DIMINUTIVE NEW ENGLAND CARVED MAHOGANY SQUARE-BACK SETTEE. Late 18th, early 19th century, Rhode Island or Northeast Coastal Connecticut. The arched crestrail continuing to downcurved winged arms terminating in swelled reeded urn form supports headed by unusual carved floral rosettes. The frame, designed for an overupholstered rectangular back flanked by overupholstered arms, centering a rectangular upholstered seat, the frame ends slighting incurved. The frame raised on square tapered and stop-fluted square tapered frontal legs terminating in brass capped casters (wheels now absent), the rear legs backswept. This example with a frame principally of chestnut and with birch and poplar secondary woods, has many traits similar to Newport furniture of the late 18th century, of note are the floral rosettes and stop-fluting on the frontal legs. SIZE: 35-1/2″ h x 52″ w, 15-1/2″ h of seat. CONDITION: Frame in structurally very good condition showing some older professional restorations to the seat rails (minor).
