ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM MATHEW PRIOR (American, 1806-1873) FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH HER DOG. This wonderful oil on canvas portrait shows a standing young girl wearing an embroidered red dress with white lace trim with red bow ties at shoulders. Decorated lace edge white bloomers and black shoes. She holds in her left hand a blue leash which she holds fast to her pet dog who sits beside her. Her right hand holds a pink rose which she has plucked from a basket of roses to her right. The background left shows the landscape with sky and trees. The right a building wall. Unsigned but clearly having the attributes of Prior’s work. Housed in a simple wood frame. SIZE: 37-3/4″ x 30″. PROVENANCE: Purchased by our consignor in the 1960’s from Mary Allis, owner of the Red Petticoat in Ridgefield, CT. CONDITION: Relined, craquelure, minor touch up.
