JAMES GARDINER BABBIDGE (American, 1844-1919) PORTRAIT OF THE COASTAL SCHOONER “COMMERCE”. Outstanding oil on canvas Maine ship portrait of the coastal two-mast black-hulled schooner “Commerce”. It sails left to right approaching Rockland Harbor with Owls Head Lighthouse off the bow. It is shown in full sail with four men on deck, the name by the stern. Several other sailboats are seen, all on a white tipped greenish ocean. This schooner was a Lime Hauling boat for the Rockland, Maine Perry Bros. Company. Signed with initials lower left in a barrel buoy with flag “JGB”. Dated “1896” below frame edge. Housed in a period, and probably original, gesso decorated gilt frame. SIZE: 22″ x 34″. PROVENANCE: Hung in the office of Perry Bros. Co. in Rockland, Maine. Descended through the family of the owners. CONDITION: Scattered retouch, cleaned & conserved by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. 9-24839 (8,000-12,000)
