OUTSTANDING RARE & IMPORTANT TAVERN SIGN FOR “THE EASTERN INN”. A note accompanying the sign indicates that this was off an old brick building known as the “Eastern Inn” located on what is now known as the “Elkton-Lisbon Road”, in Eastern Ohio, 1-1/2 miles off Route 7. The Inn was owned & operated by John Cannon during the days of the stagecoach lines. It was sold to Reed Clark, then to J H Warrick. The Inn was razed in 1890 and a house erected on the site. This fabulous sign retains what appears to be its original paint. The central rectangular panel having in large black letters “The Eastern Inn by Jno. Cannon”. The rectangular frame signed on the bottom in bold black lettering “Painted by John Kraft Pixit Hoc. Signum”. The top having an open scroll crest with decorated bowl between dated “1829”. The bottom crest with shaped design having a painted soup bowl with spoon. The top sides having wrought iron hanging hardware. The back side being identical without the painters line. SIZE: 75″ h x 45″ w. CONDITION: One small element with finial missing on top crest, paint decoration still intact with some surface wear, shrinkage to boards, but in remarkably good condition. 9-24097 (2,000-3,000)
