A VOYAGE TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, TOWARDS THE ANTARCTIC POLAR CIRCLE AND AROUND THE WORLD…BUT CHIEFLY INTO THE COUNTRY OF THE HOTTENTOT’S AND CAFFRES FROM THE YEAR 1772-1776. Two vo. set. Sparrman, Andrew. This translated from the Swedish originals, Perth printed by R. Morison, Jr. 1789. This copy formally Tobias Lear’s and so inscribed in period ink on title page in both volumes. Later in the library of Benjamin Lincoln Lear; the son of Colonel Tobias Lear, but originally these books belonged to General George Washington and were in his library at the time of death. Hand drawn inventory purportedly done by Tobias or Benjamin Lincoln Lear is also part of the Decatur-Armsden offering presented earlier. The inventory is titled “Catalog of Books Received From Washington”, (lot 2135 in this sale) first it lists the title and then the number of volumes and on page 2 of this period inventory is the inclusion Sparrmans Voyages in two volumes. Volume with a pull-out engraved plate in the frontice and two engraved plates set in the back of the book. Volume two with a pull-out map in the frontice and a total of seven plates set in the rear. Leather bindings with gilt end title. SIZE: 7″ h x 4-1/2″ w. CONDITION: Bindings show use but are generally in good condition. Interiors of books with foxing overall. Pull-out plate in volume one is torn and with stain and a few pages loose within the book. Volume two also foxed but generally sound. 9-98730 (600-1,200)
