ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH WHITING STOCK (American, 1815-1855) PORTRAIT OF A GIRL IN BLUE DRESS. Oil on canvas half portrait shows young girl with straight on view with her elbow resting on an Empire sofa arm, her hand held to the side of her face. She has red hair curled in ringlets, brown eyes, and wears a formal blue dress with lace cuff & neckline. A red drape is seen on the left side. On reverse of canvas written in three lines in large pencil script. Under blacklight the pencil inscription can be seen better but it is hard to decipher other than the date “1845” but possibly says “Springfield Mass”. Housed in a period Empire frame. A typed modern note accompanies the painting with the following provenance: Purchased from Ruggles Farm Antiques in Brookfield, MA July 1963. In February of 1978 Mr. Ruggles, who sold the painting in 1963, stated that this was a family portrait handed down in the Burrill family of North Brookfield, MA and that the portrait was never out of the house until it was purchased by Carrie Ruggles.”.
