LARGE NEEDLEWORK OF GEORGE WASHINGTON STANDING. Large needlework portrait of George Washington after a painting by Gilbert Stuart. Worked in polychrome wool, this full-length image is based on Gilbert Stuart’s 1796 Lansdowne portrait, currently in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. The Lansdowne Portrait was called such because it was a gift to the Marquis of Lansdowne, and English supporter of the American cause. Housed in a large ornate gold frame with losses and edge pieces unattached. REFERENCE: Page 132 in HISTORIC NEEDLEWORK OF PENNSYLVANIA by Schiffer illustrates the same needlework which is houses in the Chester County Historical Society. The book references the needlework as being worked in wool & silk, about 1820. SIZE: Sight: 40″ x 31-1/2″. Overall: 51″ x 42″. PROVENANCE: Descended through the Ten Eyke family, Albany, New York. CONDITION: Tapestry is in very good condition with some dirt/stain in upper right corner, a couple of small areas of stitch loss. 9-20616 (2,000-4,000)
