UNSIGNED (American, Mid 19th Century) PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF MARY W. CAMPBELL & WILLIAM TATE CAMPBELL. Oil on canvas portraits housed in identical original frames having carved block corners in gold with a black wood slat frame with molded gold edge. The man with dark coat and white shirt with arm resting on chair crest. The back having two 20th Century stickers “Wm. Tate Campbell Rich Valley Washington County VA. Wm. Campbell D. 1863”. The woman is a half portrait showing her standing the arm on chair back. She wears a lace edge black dress and shawl over left arm. A green and red background. Three modern labels on reverse “Mary W. Montgomery Campbell Wife of Wm. Tate C.” “Lived in Rich Valley, Washington County, VA Born 1799 or 1800, D. 1844″. A copy of Note: Charles Custis Rogers will lists these portraits. SIZE: 30″ x 25”. PROVENANCE: Descended thought the Rogers Family. CONDITION: Man: Old patch to reverse corresponding to upper left corner, dirty and loose on stretcher and in need of restoration. Woman: Three small patches to reverse, surface dirt, small abraded slit above forefinger and in need of restoration. 9-97970 (2,000-4,000)
