RARE AND IMPORTANT DUDLEY FAMILY QUEEN ANNE LOOKING GLASS. First quarter 18th century, Guilford, CT. With walnut veneers over pine, the original rectangular mirror plate with blued glass mounted with original backboard, within a gilt carved slip within a molded surround, the scrolled crest centering a shell carved rondel. With well documented provenance to the Dudley Family, original settlers of Guilford, CT. The homestead of which is now operated as the Dudley Farm Museum. Note: partial history is attached to backboard. SIZE: 15-3/4″ h x 9-3/4″ w. PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of William Dudley (1608-1683) to the grandson of Erastus Dudley (1783-1872). Then to Lois R. Dudley Ford to her son George D. Ford. Looking glass again surfaces in the 1960s when purchased by Roy & Joan Robbins by descent through the same family. History of provenance accompanies this lot. CONDITION: Very good with normal and expected losses to gilt slip and with shrinkage cracks to molded surround. Original gilding to rondel now absent from normal wear. Small, early chip to proper right ear of crest. One crest brace absent. Generally very find condition. 9-25635 (2,000-3,000)
