WONDERFUL EARLY 19TH CENTURY PICTORIAL SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH ANDERSON, 1811. The large sampler having a wide floral vine border encircling a rectangular area outlined with four potted plants, the pots having heart shapes, two large trees with a connecting flower vine and three arrangements of flowers in heart shaped holders. At the top center in a box “My Parents – Isaac & Mary Anderson My Brothers & Sisters – James, Sarah, Edward, Samuel, Wesley, Simon III, Isaac, Mary, Joseph B & Mary Anderson”. At the center is an eight-line verse “I envy no one’s birth or fame Their titles, train or dress Nor has my pride e’er stretched its arm Beyond what I possess I ask not, wish not to appear More beauteous, rich or gay Lord make me wiser every year And better every day” which is an excerpt of a Charles Lamb (1775-1834) poem written in 1809, titled “A Birth-Day Thought.” Below which is written “Elizabeth Anderson Her Sampler 1811″. Housed in an antique lemon gold molded wood frame with what appears to be an original glass having black gold edge. The frame and back paper having a Thomas Natt label from Philadelphia, PA. Thomas Natt worked as a carver, gilder, looking glass maker, importer & merchant in Philadelphia between 1809-1841. We believe through genealogical research it has been established that Elizabeth was born in 1794 and died in 1814. Her father, we believe was the Isaac Anderson who was the colorful and well known Indian fighter, courier to General Washington at Valley Forge, and U.S. Congressman. Her sister Sarah (1784-1852) married Mathias Pennypacker who became Governor of Pennsylvania. The Anderson Family resided in Chester, PA. There is no doubt of the origins of the family and the maker of this wonderful sampler. We have been unable to ascribe it to a particular Pennsylvania school. SIZE: Sight: 21″ x 17”. CONDITION: Some fading but still readable and colorful. There is a pencil size hole in the top box, some brown toning, otherwise good. 9-21739 (1,500-2,500)
