TWO LARGE CALLIGRAPHY SAMPLES BY S.E. MOONEY. Late 19th century, American. The first, titled “A Specimen of Ornamental Penmanship by Mrs. S.E. Mooney Hopedale Ohio 1888” all within florid scrolling banners beneath the image of a fanciful allegorical galloping stag ridden by Diana depicted with crown and flowing robe emanating a banner reading “THE BOUNDING STAG BEARS DIANA TO THE CHASE”. The second, titled “Ornamental Penmanship as executed by S.E. Mooney” depicting an elephant carrying a banner in its trunk with the words “Work for the Night is coming” in red and black lettering. Along the bottom of the work is depicted seven various plants rendered in calligraphy emanating from the phrase “YOUTH IS THE TIME TO LEARN”, each letter depicted as leafy tree branches. Each housed in an ebonized and gilt 19th century frame. SIZE: Sight: 21-1/4″ x 27-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From the “Harp House” of Camden, Maine.
