MANUSCRIPT DRAWING OF AN INVENTION FOR LOWERING & RAISING BOATS OVER THE GREAT FALLS OF THE POTOMAC TO AVOID THE CONSTRUCTION OF LOCKS; FOUND AMONG PAPERS OF TOBIAS LEAR. This drawing was known to Washington who wrote to Lear about it on December 22, 1794. Lear was the president of the Potomac Company of which Washington became an original subscriber to its shares. Washington was keenly interested in the development of lands west of the Alleghenies. If it had not been for the invention of the railroad this device might well have been built. The drawing came to Washington from Mr. Clairborne. CONDITION: Very good. 9-97939 (1,000-1,500)
