WILLIAM A. MARSH (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE AMERICAN SHIP “VIOLA”. Oil on canvas side view of the three-mast black and white hull ship sailing right to left into harbor past white lighthouse on rocky bluff. Three other sails are seen off stern, the ship has partial sails up, flies ship flag off center mast and U.S. flag off stern. The bow having a colorful figurehead and the green deck showing a number of sailors in red outfits. Signed lower right “W Marsh 1845”. Housed in a modern blue molded wood frame. Back canvas stamp of “A. Morris, Boston”. A modern note on stretcher indicates ship “Gov. Goodwin”. William Marsh worked in the Boston area in the mid 1800’s and has several paintings at the Peabody Museum of Salem. SIZE: 24″ x 34″. CONDITION: All over fine craquelure, a few chips at edges, surface dirt. Otherwise very good. 9-97963 (1,000-2,000)
