INTERESTING WATERCOLOR DEPICTION OF THE VOLCANIC BIRTH & DEATH OF GRAHAM ISLAND. This six part watercolor shows various stages of the volcanic eruption creating what was known as Graham Island which disappeared shortly after its creation. Three of the watercolors show side views of the island at various stages of eruption. One shows a view looking down on the island from above, and one shows the location in relation to Sicily. The last has a pen inscribed section titled “Remarks” as follows: “This volcanic island called Graham Island was thrown up suddenly in _ _ _ _ Italy 1931 from a depth of 130 fathoms Commandant Smith of H.B.N.S.? _ _ _ ? was ordered to ascertain its formation which he lays down in Lat 37.10 N Long. 12.44.8 It is about 3/4 of a mile in circumference and its greatest height 80 feet above the level of the sea sounded within 80 yards and found most less than 62 from center bottom of ? to the distance of 5 or 6 miles. The US ship Boston ? close to the island on the 7th Sept 1831 Report states that the island disappeared in Novr 1831 leaving a dangerous shoal”. Housed in a simple modern frame with glass. NOTE: This island which has emerged again in 2002 caused a small international stir regarding which country it belongs to. This may be one of the only period renditions of its birth in 1831. SIZE: Sight: 9-3/4″ x 12-3/4″. CONDITION: Some light foxing and stains, three small tears in border, otherwise very good. 9-97957-1 (400-600)
